A South African Chic Safari in the Heart of Buckhead: Yebo Restaurant & Bar

For those of you unaware, Buckhead is going through a major renovation.  Lenox Square Mall just wrapped up their re-grand opening in July 2014 and Phipps is next up. The Streets of Buckhead area is officially in operation and more and more new retail shops and restaurants are flooding the Buckhead area.

One favorite that has been a part of Phipps Plaza for 2 years is Yebo, which is located to the left of the front valet of the mall.  Pronounced “yeah-bo” meaning ‘yes’ is a chic depiction of South African cuisine with a modern and simplistic design. Yebo is a new venture from Justin Anthony of Atlanta’s widely recognized 10 Degrees South.

Sugar, Spice and Everything NICE: Pastry Live 2014

August 24th to August 26th

As Atlanta becomes recognized and perceived as a foodie city, it’s only appropriate that the best food festivals and competitions bring people from around the country and the world to the city.  During the last week of August, the largest pastry competition in the country, Pastry Live, happened in downtown Atlanta.  Pastry Live was created by chefs for chefs as a way to bring the industries best chefs together to compete.  The annual event has grown significantly that this year (2014) the competition was moved to 200 Peachtree St, one of the largest special events venues in the heart of the city. Each day had a different schedule of competitions for culinary students and professionals.  Various awards, such as Chocolatier of the Year, Art of Cake, and Best Sugar Showpiece, were evaluated and scored by a panel of experienced judges.  The audience also got a chance to participate in the voting during the People’s Choice category.  For those with a sweet tooth, Pastry Live is like stepping into Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for 3 days and going into sugar shock.  The venue constantly had a flow of attendees throughout the competition that experienced fine desserts, chocolates, cakes, and more.

I was asked by a colleague to review a new Indian Restaurant called Currylicious on Satellite Boulevard in Duluth, Georgia.  Currylicious is a family-owned Indian restaurant that opened in the beginning of 2014. The executive chef is mom, the front of house is dad, and the sous chef and business operations are run by the son, Azim Hooda.  For a restaurant to have ‘delicious’ as part of its name, I thought I’d be in for a treat. On the contrary, I experienced the opposite.

Red, White & Brew 2014 Review

Red, White & Brew is an annual event held on the Fourth of July at the Georgia Aquarium, where an admission ticket gives visitors access to a live band, unlimited food & alcohol, and a firework viewing from the top of the parking deck. All proceeds raised from this event goes towards Sponsored Education Admissions (SEA), as well as other educational initiatives of the Georgia Aquarium, which offers kids a closer look into understanding aquatic life.
